Ghana: President Orders Ministers, Appointees to Stop Accepting ‘Best-Performing’ Awards

🇬🇭 Ghana: President Orders Ministers, Appointees to Stop Accepting ‘Best-Performing’ Awards

The President of Ghana has directed all ministers, deputy ministers, and political appointees to stop accepting “Best-Performing” and similar self-congratulatory awards, in a move aimed at promoting modesty, accountability, and public service discipline.

According to the directive, such awards often create a perception of self-praise within government and may undermine public trust in governance, especially at a time when citizens expect stronger performance in service delivery.

The order affects all categories of political appointees across ministries, departments, and government agencies. Officials are now expected to focus more on measurable results and national development goals rather than attending award ceremonies that highlight individual recognition.

The presidency emphasized that public office is a duty, not a platform for personal accolades. Instead of receiving awards, officials are encouraged to channel their energy toward improving efficiency, transparency, and service delivery to citizens.

The directive has already sparked mixed reactions. While some citizens and analysts have welcomed the move as a step toward reducing political showmanship, others believe it may discourage healthy recognition of hard work within public service.

Ghana continues to position itself as one of West Africa’s democratic leaders, and this latest policy direction is seen as part of broader efforts to reform governance culture and strengthen accountability.
